The rapid pace of innovation in information and communication technologies (ICT) is impacting every aspect of Caribbean life. There is a clarion call for the region to keep abreast with and understand the potential of these new and revolutionary technologies to overcome the challenges faced by the Caribbean and to drive meconomic growth.
It is imperative that Caribbean leaders consider the opportunities presented by the ICT revolution and adopt the technologies that can transform all sectors and promote social and economic development.
Against this backdrop, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, in collaboration with the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), will be hosting the ICT Week and Symposium at the Sandals Grande Resort and Spa from March 20-24, 2017. Ms. Bernadette Lewis, the Secretary General of the CTU noted that the theme for the Symposium is “ICT: Driving 21st Century Intelligent Services.” She explained the purpose of the Week’s activities as being “to raise awareness of the ICT revolution, the implications for policy, legislation and regulations and how they can be employed to transform existing operations; to foster social inclusion; provide ICT-based the challenges we face in the region and promote national and regional development.”
De activiteiten van de week omvatten een aantal ICT-evenementen, waaronder een Smart Caribbean-conferentie, 15e Caribische ministeriële strategische ICT-seminar, 3e Caribische bijeenkomst van belanghebbenden: cyberveiligheid en cybercriminaliteit, en culmineert in het trainingsprogramma over mobiel geld voor financiële inclusie.
Op de Smart Caribbean Conference zal Huawei, de platina-sponsor van ICT Week, presenteren hoe nieuwe ICT zoals cloud computing, virtualisatie, Big Data, Geografisch Informatie Systeem (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT) en het ecosysteem Software Development Kit (eSDK) kan worden gebruikt om uitgebreide, end-to-end Smart Caribbean-oplossingen te creëren. Oplossingen zijn onder meer de veilige stad, smart city-operatiecentra, one-stop overheidsdiensten, slim transport en toepassingen voor gezondheidszorg, onderwijs en toerisme.
Het 15e Caribische ministeriële strategische ICT-seminar zal zich richten op de toepassing van ICT in de financiële dienstensector en zal nieuwe manieren onderzoeken om veilige financiële diensten aan alle burgers te bieden; het gebruik van cryptocurrencies; cyberveiligheid en innovatieve manieren om de ICT-ontwikkeling van de regio te financieren.
De Caribbean Stakeholders 'Meeting III: Cybersecurity and Cybercrime zal discussies faciliteren voor het vaststellen van passende maatregelen en middelen voor de uitvoering van het Caribbean Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Action Plan.
Het trainingsprogramma over mobiel geld voor financiële inclusie, gefaciliteerd door GSMA, beoogt een diepgaande kijk te geven op mobiele gelddiensten - hoe ze werken, de betrokken belanghebbenden en de regelgevende factoren, evenals kritieke kwesties zoals interoperabiliteit tussen netwerken .
